Comaskey v Comaskey
Charity Football Game
On Tuesday 21st June, the 5th and 6th Class pupils organised and held a football match for charity. The winning team would choose the charity of choice after the game. The pupils appointed Miss Boyle as referee and opposing managers Vera and Miss Comaskey.
...And so the rivalry began.
A fantastic game from start to finish, one that saw Miss Comaskey's 'Bibs' ahead by 4-2 at halftime.
A comeback from Vera's team saw the game end in a 4-4 draw, with penalties to be the decider of the winning team.
A huge CONGRATS to Vera's team who won 3-2 after penalties.
Most importantly, an even bigger congrats to the 5th and 6th pupils for organising such a successful fundraiser, raising the highest sum ever raised in a school fundraiser by the children.
The winning team chose 'Little Blue Heroes' as their charity of choice, revealing in the end that both teams, had decided on this worthy charity as the receivers of their fundraiser, regardless of the result.

School Tours are BACK!
5th & 6th Class visit Cavan Adventure Centre
The first of our tours was to Cavan Adventure Centre on Friday, the 3rd of June with 5th and 6th Class. The children were provided with wet suits and helmets on arrival. They were taught and learned many water skills through games and activities designed to make the most of their time at the centre. Despite the rain, the children enjoyed moving freely through the water on their kayak taking in the wildlife and historical features in their near surroundings.
After lunch, it was time to unleash their more adventurous side with the inflatable obstacle course. The children had great fun bouncing, jumping, climbing and falling off. After the obstacle course, the children were collected in style by boat as sailors Miss Boyle, Miss Comaskey and the tour guide sailed them
to shore. A lovely end to a very adventurous day.

Infants, 1st and 2nd visit Mellowes
The excitement continued on Thursday the 9th June when the Infants, 1st and 2nd Class set off to Mellowes; a day of adventure through play and learning.
On what was another rainy day, the weather most definitely did not spoil the fun. After some crazy golf, football, go-carting, sandcastle building and pirate ship roleplay, the children were guided to the Mellowes garden to do some planting.
After lunch, the children were put back into their groups and enjoyed time on the bouncing castle, and on the climb and multi-play towers.
It was extremely enjoyable and the children loved every second.

Cumann na mBunscol
WINNERS!
Rounders Champions!
The final of the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Rounders competition between St. Patrick's NS, Gowna and Mullahoran NS took place in Mullahoran Park on Sunday 12th June.
Three innings would decide who would take home the Dympna Reilly Memorial Sheild for 2022.
There was great batting and fielding on both teams, and while Gowna came out victorious, it was also a win for Erne Eagles Rounders club with members of the club on both school teams.
The final score was Gowna 24 - Mullahoran 20.
Dympna Reilly, who was instrumental in helping Cavan Cumann na mBunscol include Rounders as one of the competitions organised at county level in 2015, would have been very proud of the standard of rounders on display during the final.
Well done to everyone involved!

AMBER FLAG AWARD
We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded our very first Amber Flag. This award is given to schools that make a concerted effort to promote and improve the mental health and well-being of their pupils. The committee worked hard throughout the year, alongside their lead teacher, to make positive changes and coordinate activities to promote healthy mental health and well-being in our students and teachers. The committee would like to express its gratitude to all the students, staff, and parents who assisted us in obtaining the first Amber flag for St Patrick's NS. Also, a big thank you to Pieta House for recognising all our efforts and for all the work they do to assist those in need. We now have the flag, but our effort to promote healthy mental health and wellness at our school is far from over. Finally, none of this would be possible without Tom, Paige, Michael, Ellen, Senan, and Amelia's tireless efforts, so congrats to them for being the first committee to receive the Pieta House Amber Flag for our school!
First Holy Communion 2022
Congratulations to the boys and girls of 2nd Class; Finlay, Senan, Fiadh, Finn, Dearbhla, Darcy and Emily. A big 'Thank You' to Grace and Mason for all of their support to the First Communion Class all year. A special word of appreciation to Fr. Bannon, Miss Pierson and Vera for preparing the children so well and to Miss Boyle, Mrs Crossan and the children's choir for the beautiful music which really added to the ceremony.

Marathon Kids Updates
A huge congratulations to of all the 5th & 6th class pupils who completed their first marathon yesterday. The children have been absolutely amazing over the past 8 weeks of this programme. They took part in four running sessions each week inching them closer to completing their first marathon as well as learning about the benefits of physical activity.
The finale saw the students running their last mile and completing the marathon to the cheers of their fellow pupils, teachers and parents. We would like to thank @MarathonKidsIreland and Cavan Sports Partnership for organising such a wonderful event.
Thanks to Cavan Sports Partnership and Community Sports Development Officer, Aine O'Reilly, today was a very special day for the pupils of 5th & 6th class when the Marathon Kids ambassador, former Olympian and 400m European Champion, David Gillick, paid a visit to our school. David gave a very insightful talk about the benefits of sport to the children's physical, social and mental health. He shared how nutrition and sleep also contribute greatly to all sports and he shared some tremendous tips on how to calm the mind when under pressure.
The students had lots of questions for David about racing at the Olympics, running his first marathon, winning celebrity Masterchef and the all important question of what soccer team he supports, was also answered. Afterwards, David guided the children in their warmup and joined them for their daily run. He even challenged them to a race, where he met stiff competition!!!

Ireland's Future is Mine
Ireland’s Future is Mine is a joint initiative between RTÉjr and Microsoft Dream Space using Minecraft: Education Edition as an educational tool to engage school communities in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The motto,
“If they can dream it, they can build it”
was certainly true in our senior classrooms over the past few months as the pupils combined the fun of Minecraft with teaching and learning.
The pupils watched six episodes from Microsoft Dream Space and each week there was a new learning experience which supported the pupils on learning new skills, mining new knowledge and building their craft.
The pupils were ready to build and have fun while doing it. They had to recreate how their village or locality would look in a more sustainable future. The completed videos show the planning, collaboration and team work that took place in our classrooms.
Some of the things that the pupils have learned on the Ireland’s Future is Mine journey.

I Planted a Tree and My Garden is Pesticide FREE!
Our school is participating in an initiative being rolled out to create awareness about the dangers of pesticides to our local water sources. We were visited today, Wednesday 23rd February, by Sinéad Higgins from National Federation of Group Water Schemes and Emer Colwell, Irish Water and they provided each household with a native Irish tree to plant in their home garden, together with an information pack containing a 4 page gardening booklet, certificate and information on how to plant the tree.
The Erne Valley Group Water Scheme which abstracts water from Garty Lough is interested in finding out about pesticide use in our catchment as part of a source protection project. I would be grateful if you could take 5 minutes to complete a short anonymous questionnaire at the link below. If the link doesn’t work, please copy and paste into your search bar.

Children's Mental Health Week
As part of our school’s work towards receiving the Pieta House Amber Flag, we celebrated Children’s Mental Health from 7th-13th February. The girls and boys of St Patrick's NS have had great fun taking part in lots of activities and games.
The children enjoyed some mindfulness colouring and yoga on Mindful Monday. On Gratitude Tuesday, they created a whole school gratitude garden on our Amber Flag notice board, where they used the petals of their flower to share what they are grateful for. Wednesday, we focused on physical wellbeing. Many children were quick to point out the link between physical and mental health and its importance in our lives. To get those endorphins flowing, the children went on a walk/run around our new AstroTurf for a mile with a smile. On Terrific Thursday, the children were busy creating amber hands with their favourite positive affirmation. These amber hands were used to create a sun on our Amber Flag noticeboard which symbolised how the sun will always rise again. We ended awareness week with Feel Good Friday, where the children participated in a range of fun and engaging games. In addition, the children have been secretly carrying out random acts of kindness throughout the week. The Amber Flag committee members chose their favourite random act of kindness from each classroom and those thoughtful children were rewarded with a coveted homework pass. The standards were extremely high which did not make the job easy for our committee members.
Lastly, a massive well done to all the boys and girls for participating in our school's Children's Mental Health Week. Also, a big thank you to Ms. Pierson and our Amber Flag committee members Paige (6th), Tom (5th), Ellen (4th), Michael (3rd), Senan (2nd) and Amelia (1st) for organising and running such a memorable and enjoyable week in our school.

Christmas 2021
There is lots of fun and excitement this week in the lead-up to Christmas. Elf on the Shelf arrived to the children of Junior and Senior Infants to help report back to Santa just how sensible they are. The children have informed us on what the Elves of the North Pole are getting up during the night at home. My goodness, they are busy!
The pupils in First and Second Class have each written a nice 'compliment snowflake' to another child in their class on a snow-flake and they adorn their class Christmas tree.
Third and Fourth Class pupils have decorated a star and written how they are shining light to others to make Christmas a special time.
Fifth and Sixth class pupils find out each morning what their advent surprise is ; homework pass, sweets or extra Minecraft time.
Projects
Third and fourth class completed a project on Antartica and Tom Crean over six weeks. The project required each pupil to complete research notes on many different aspects of Antarctica and on the life of Tom Crean. Each group completed a folder to reflect their research and a PowerPoint presentation to share what they had learned with fifth and sixth class via zoom. They also created art work, a time line of Tom Crean's life and a Kahoot quiz as part of their project. The PowerPoint presentations took place on Friday 17th of December and it was a huge achievement for many pupils as it was their first time formally presenting to their peers.
Fifth and sixth class pupils completed projects on European Countries and Civilisations, Brands, Species and Agriculture. Each group will present their Power point presentations via Zoom throughout the other classrooms. They also have completed folders for each project Together with a model detailing all their research on their respective topic.
Pictured below are the winning teams.
Well done everyone!

Inside Out Christmas Jumper Day
As part of St Patrick’s Amber Flag Initiative, we held an ‘Inside Out Christmas Jumper Day on December 17th to raise funds for Pieta House. Pieta House is an organisation that works tirelessly to generate and nourish hope amongst those suffering from mental health in Ireland. Inside Out Day encourages everyone to wear their Christmas jumper inside out to raise awareness for children’s mental health and to outline the concept that how someone looks on the outside doesn’t always reflect how they are truly feeling on the inside. The aim of the committee is to promote positive mental health in our school. This term we have been busy looking at all of their achievements. All classes thought carefully about all of their proudest achievement and displayed them on a leaf. Each child’s leaf was placed on the ‘Achievement Tree’ on the Amber Flag’s noticeboard for all to see.
Green Schools
Our Green Schools committee were delighted when our bike rack was installed over the midterm break. It is located in the community centre carpark and has the capacity to hold ten bicycles.
It is a great addition to the school and we are looking forward to using it in the new year.

Swimming
The children of 5th and 6th Class completed three weeks of swimming lessons, each comprising of 45 minutes with three instructors. A lot of progress was achieved and the children should be very proud.
Science Week
8-12 November 2021
We had lots of fun exploring Science during Science week. All classes virtually visited a variety of workshops organised by Cavan Monaghan Science Festival. Some included : Puzzling Maths, Ugly Animals, Insect Myth-busting, Fur Feathers Scales and Tails from Dublin Zoo, Who Lives Here from Dublin Zoo, Fizz Inflators and The Secret Science of Santa.
You may still be able to access some of these workshops using this link:

Some of the experiments carried out at school this week included testing pH values in 5th and 6th Class, using Red cabbage indicator.
Because red cabbage has an indicator pigment, it is possible to determine the pH of a solution based on the colour it turns the red cabbage juice. The pH of a solution is a Chemistry Kitchen numerical measure of how basic or acidic it is. A solution with a pH between 5 and 7 is neutral, 8 or higher is a base, and 4 or lower is an acid.
In 3rd 4th Class, we saw the children make a rainbow. This is a beautiful STEM activity that could also be carried out at home using a blank CD and paper. Not only did the children create rainbow reflections with the CD, but they used paper to alter the patterns of the light. Also conducted in 3rd and 4th Class this week, was an experiment on the density of water and oil.
In 1st and 2nd Class, an experiment called 'Orange Fizz' taught the children that when acids and bases mix, you get some exciting chemistry! With the experiment; 'Fireworks in a Jar', the children learned that as you pour the container of oil and coloured droplets into the jar of oil, the coloured drops will begin to sink because they are heavier than the oil. Once they reach the water in the jar, they start to dissolve in the water and this makes the fireworks in a jar.
In Junior and Senior Infants, the children conducted many experiments. One was the experiment of 'Pepper and Soap' teaching the children about the importance of washing their hands, especially these days! As well as that, the Infants enlarged gummy bears by placing the bears into a cup of water and leaving them to rest overnight... zZzZzZz
This was to reveal the secrets of osmosis. The bears were monstrous the next morning.
It was os-mazing!
These are just some of the highlights of our Science Week here at school. Parents, be sure to ask the children LOTS of questions about all of the other experiments and workshops they took part in at school this week because one particularly valuable lesson we learned this Science Week was that:

Maths Week 2021
We have been very busy celebrating Maths Week in St Patrick's N.S this week. We played and created some fun Numeracy games, cracked plenty of codes, and tried our best to solve many puzzles and problems.
Some cross-curricular links were made in other subjects in our curriculum to ensure Numeracy was practiced as often as possible this week.
We hope by engaging our children in many fun and exciting new ways to learn 'Maths' each day at school, that we are ensuring a positive attitude towards the subject of Numeracy.
